Simona Ghizzoni
Odd Day is a reportage analysing the everyday life of girls suffering from eating disorders. In these two photographs Simona Ghizzoni portrays the homonymous Simona, the most seriously ill and isolated patient at the centre. The two Simonas manage to establish through photography a relationship of exchange and friendship that is destined to remain solid and long-lasting even after the treatment period.
Years ago Ghizzoni spent a lot of time in close contact with the patients in a therapy centre in Todi, in Umbria, trying to portray the isolation and the most hidden aspects of girls suffering from eating disorders. The photographer established a relationship of exchange with another Simona, also a patient, a friendship that remained solid and long-lasting even after the treatment period.
SIMONA GHIZZONI uses the language of photography to explore themes linked to female identity and to reveal submerged contemporary realities. After graduating in History of Photography, she worked on long-term projects such as Odd Days – focusing on eating disorders and on the difficult road to recovery – for which she won the “World Press Photo Award” in 2008. *She was born in Reggio Emilia in 1977, she lives and works in Rome.
