Lisetta Carmi began taking photographs in the
1960s, using the camera as a tool of political activism and existential exploration.
Her works reveal an intense and intimate connection with her subjects - from the port of Genoa to the transgender community portrayed in “I travestiti”
(1966-1972).

In this groundbreaking series, Carmi documented lives often unseen, with empathy and disarming honesty. She became a trusted friend to those she photographed, capturing them as they wished to be seen.

After decades of travel - from Latin America to Afghanistan and India - Carmi eventually left photography to dedicate herself to spirituality.

Born in Genoa in 1924, she lived in Apulia, where she founded an Ashram, until her passing in 2022.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME - ITALIAN PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE THE 1980s

Curated by @iksmedienarchiv
For the first time in Germany, four institutions are jointly exploring the influence of Italian photography on the development of European photographic history since the 1980s within the exhibition “No Place like Home”.

Up to 340 works by around 40 photographers will be on display - artists whose practices draw on Arte Povera and Neorealism, while engaging in dialogue with the American New Colour movement and with German photography as taught by Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School in Essen and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

The exhibition is curated by Ralph Goertz, director of IKS Photo Düsseldorf, and realised in close collaboration with @kunsthalledarmstadt, @schauwerk_sindelfingen and the @draiflessencollection.

📍On view until 11 January 2026 @kunsthalledarmstadt

At the Thirty-eighth Biennale dell’Arte in Venice in 1978 entitled “Dalla natura all’arte dall’arte alla natura (From nature to art from art to nature)”, at Spazio Aperto, Magazzini del Sale alle Zattere, the Feminist Group “Immagine” of Varese and the “Donne Immagine Creatività” Group of Naples found space for their installations entitled “Dalla Creatività come Maternità – Natura al Controllo (Contro Ruolo) della Natura” (From Creativity as Maternity – Nature to Control (Against Role) of Nature. In the photograph in the Collection, Milli Gandini is photographed in front of a panel made up of postcards representing the phases of the moon that are associated with the archetypal dimension of the relationship with the Great Mother, as if to recall a primordial female divinity.
