Frankfurt am Main, 30.01.2020 – Five decades of photography, as seen from a female perspective: under the title RESISTANCE & SENSIBILITY, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) presents 150 works by Italian women photographers from 1965 to the present day. The selection from the “Collezione Donata Pizzi” shows various facets of everyday life, social and contemporary history. A main focus is on women’s lives: hopes and illusions, relationships, struggles and going beyond borders are some of the aspects addressed. Rarities in the exhibition include a vintage photograph of women in a political terrorist group and early pictures of transvestites, with a publication that was censored immediately at the time.
All works in RESISTANCE & SENSIBILITY are part of the Collezione Donata Pizzi. The collection of the Italian photographer, picture editor and collector Donata Pizzi (*1957, lives in Milan), which began in 2014, is one of the few collections worldwide with works exclusively by female artists. It comprises more than 250 pieces by more than 70 Italian photographers of different generations and is constantly being expanded.
True to the collection, the exhibition at the FFF also represents important phases and themes in contemporary Italian photography. The show displays different photographic styles such as photojournalism, documentation and abstraction. In addition, it presents conceptual and experimental artistic positions and supports numerous examples of artwork which illustrate aesthetic, iconographic and technological developments within the history of photography. In terms of content, the works deal with the socio-political changes of their time as well as with role clichés, feminist ideas and questions of identity, relationships and the body. RESISTANCE & SENSIBILITY. Collezione Donata Pizzi displays a trove of expressive photographic moments and a diversity of female photographic art, previously undiscovered, with Italy as the example.
The special program on the opening weekend, will include workshops with award-winning female artists from the show, lectures and guided tours, among others with collector founder Donata Pizzi. RESISTANCE & SENSIBILITY is generously supported by the Department of Women’s Affairs of the City of Frankfurt and the “Feith Stiftung”.
